چکیده

The velocity dispersion of 7 Seyfert 1 galaxies at z ∼ 0.37 is measured using high signal-to-noise Keck spectra. Black hole (BH) mass estimates are obtained via an empirically calibrated photoionization method. We derive the BH mass velocity dispersion relationship at z ∼ 0.37. We find an offset with respect to the local relationship, in the sense of somewhat lower velocity dispersion at a fixed BH mass at z ∼ 0.37 than today, significant at the 97% level. The offset corresponds to ∆ log σ = −0.16 with rms scatter of 0.13 dex. If confirmed by larger samples and independent checks on systematic uncertainties and selection effects, this result would be consistent with spheroids evolving faster than BHs in the past 4 Gyrs and inconsistent with pure luminosity evolution. The Evolution of the Mbh-σ Relation

We examine the evolution of the black hole mass stellar velocity dispersion (MBH−σ) relation over cosmic time using simulations of galaxy mergers that include feedback from supermassive black hole growth. Our calculations have been shown to reproduce the power-law scaling of the local, redshift zero MBH−σ relation and yield the observed normalization for an appropriate choice of the feedback ef...

The Evolution of the Mbh-σ Relation Inferred from the Age Distribution of Local Early-type Galaxies and Agn Evolution

We utilize the local velocity dispersion function (VDF) of spheroids, together with their inferred age– distributions, to predict the VDF at higher redshifts (0 < z ∼< 6), under the assumption that (i) most of the stars in each nearby spheroid formed in a single episode, and (ii) the velocity dispersion σ remained nearly constant afterward. We assume further that a supermassive black hole (BH) ...

Self-regulated Growth of Supermassive Black Holes in Galaxies as the Origin of the Optical and X-ray Luminosity Functions of Quasars

We postulate that supermassive black-holes grow in the centers of galaxies until they unbind the galactic gas that feeds them. We show that the corresponding self-regulation condition yields a correlation between black-hole mass (Mbh) and galaxy velocity dispersion (σ) as inferred in the local universe, and recovers the observed optical and X-ray luminosity functions of quasars at redshifts up ...

The correlation between black hole mass and bulge velocity dispersion in hierarchical galaxy formation models

Recent work has demonstrated that there is a tight correlation between the mass of a black hole and the velocity dispersion of the bulge of its host galaxy. We show that the model of Kauffmann & Haehnelt, in which bulges and supermassive black holes both form during major mergers, produces a correlation between Mbh and σ with slope and scatter comparable to the observed relation. In the model, ...

Black Hole Growth and Activity in a Λcdm Universe

The observed properties of supermassive black holes suggest a fundamental link between their assembly and the formation of their host spheroids. We model the growth and activity of black holes in galaxies using ΛCDM cosmological hydrodynamic simulations by following the evolution of the baryonic mass component in galaxy potential wells. We find that the observed steep relation between black hol...
